With supervised daily busing
from Orleans, each camp has a limited registration of 20 Junior
Zoo Keepers per camp - an intimate group of animal enthusiasts
that enjoy to the max, all that this special camp has to offer.
The trained camp councilors show the Junior Zoo Keepers some of
the many facets to the working of a zoo, that it is not just a
collection of animals for the public to view, but indeed a
‘modern arc’ that will preserve many of the world’s endangered
species.
Everyday in this fun
friendly camp, the campers conduct their own ‘Zoo Check’ and
prepare the food for, with the aid of a Keeper, feed some of the
omnivores and primates at the zoo. They also have their own
special animals to take care of in a part of the zoo that is not
open to the public. Over the course of the week they build up a
reference manual of ‘Stat Sheets’ pertaining to all the animals
they have learned about. The popularity of the camp and the
return of some campers for their fourth year, lead to the Level
II camp being held at the end of the summer.
Meeting the ‘babies’ of the
Zoo has to be one of the hi-lights of the week. Wolf puppies,
Ring-Tailed Lemurs, Raccoons, lion cubs, baby lynx and the first
Snow Leopards to be born at Papanack are just some of the guest
babies that the Junior Zoo Keepers have met over the years. This
year, who knows who it will be! A visit with the Lemurs on Lemur
Island is always one of the high-lights of the camp.

The ‘Graduation’ ceremony at
the end of the camp is a wonderful conclusion to the week.
Watched by their families, each camper receives a certificate of
participation, a lifetime membership to the Zoo and their place
as a graduate on the very elite Junior Zoo Keeper ‘Wall of
Fame’. Then their first job as a ‘Junior Zoo Keeper’ is to give
their families a guided tour of the Zoo and show you just what
they have been up to for the past week.
All in all, Junior Zoo
Keeper Camp really is an ‘educational adventure’ that creates
memories and friendships that will last a life time!

Common Zoo Camp Questions
Do they have to
complete Level 1 first?
Yes, it’s a bit like swimming, it
doesn’t go by age.
Will my child be
able to be in the same group as her friend?
Yes, just let us know ahead of
time.
Can my child
complete level 1, and return for level ll the same summer?
Yes.
Will my child be
with other children their age?
Yes, we run two camps and try to
group the younger campers in one camp and the older campers in
the other.
What happens if it
rains?
We do have sheltered arbors for
the campers as well as a classroom, but as much as possible we
try to keep to our schedule.
What time is
graduation?
Graduation is at 2.30pm on the
Friday.
Can my children
bring their own lunch?
Yes, but we also have a snack bar
and we take the lunch orders ahead of time so that our campers
do not have to spend all of their lunchtime waiting for their
lunch
How much is the
cost of an average lunch at the snack bar?
Our prices are very competitive,
but less than $8
What time is bus pick up and drop off?
The
councilors wait by the garden center of the east end department
store at Place d’ Orleans Shopping Mall from 8.00am and the bus
picks up at 8.30am to get to the Zoo around 9.00am, depending on
if they have pick up’s en route.
It then
leaves at 3.30pm to arrive back at Place d’ Orleans for 4.00pm.
The councilors then wait until all of the campers have left
before leaving themselves
Does the bus still
run on Friday for any children who’s parents can’t make it to
graduation?
Yes.
Can my child
repeat any levels?
Yes, each year some of the animals
and the councilors change as well as new babies are born and the
zoo itself changes and grows, so there is always lots of new
experiences waiting for you at Papanack Park Zoo.
Do they go in with
any animals?
There is some interaction with the
animals, especially the more social animal, like the lemurs and
the younger animals and new babies. This interaction is always
supervised and conducted with the utmost safety. For safety
reasons they do not interact with any of the large predators.
What animals do
they get to feed?
The Junior Zoo Keepers help to
prepare and to feed the fruits, vegetables, grain and hay to
animals such as the primates, barnyard animals, bears etc. They
do not feed any meat to the carnivores, again for health and
safety reasons.
General Rules upon your visit to Papanack Zoo
For everyone to enjoy their visit
to Papanack Zoo, we ask that you observe the following while in
the park:
-
Teasing the animals will
not be tolerated. This includes growling, hissing,
spitting, throwing objects (e.g. stones, bubble gum, etc.)

Do not cross or climb the
Barrier fences - they are there for the protection of
both our animals and visitors.
-
Please do not leave children
unsupervised in the Play Area.
-
Please do not pull grass and
